AI capability maturity in Renly
Where Renly helps with each domain and initiative of the AI Capability Maturity Assessment, which plan each capability needs, and the work that stays with your organisation.
New to the model? Read the AI Capability Maturity Assessment, or run the free assessment to get your profile, a roadmap and reports in Word and Excel. The model and its reports recommend no product; this page is the only place Renly is mapped to it.
Your part, and Renly’s
Only capabilities verified against the Renly product and its documentation are listed. Status ‘available’ means generally available on the plans shown; ‘beta’ is available but still changing; ‘new’ was released in the last 30 days and should be confirmed in the customer’s environment; ‘early-access’ is enabled per organisation on request. Renly helps with the parts of an initiative that run in Renly; it never replaces the organisation’s own decisions, forums or obligations.
Of the 80 initiatives in the library, Renly helps with 50. The other 30 are decisions, forums, documents and practices that no platform can carry for you; they are listed at the end of this page.
Domain by domain
1. Strategy and leadership
Renly capabilities that help: AI governance assessment, AI Use Register, AI incident register, Monitoring and export, Evidence Passport. Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-101 Write and endorse the AI strategyLifts 1.1 to 3 | The free AI governance assessment on renly.ai produces a draft strategy in Word that can seed the first draft. The strategy itself is a leadership decision.AI governance assessment Free |
| I-102 Agree the AI risk appetite and tier criteriaLifts 1.2 to 3, 3.2 to 2 | Once the criteria are agreed, the AI Use Register scores risk across eight factors to suggest a tier for AI that runs in Renly, so the criteria are applied the same way each time.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-105 Stand up the quarterly executive AI reviewLifts 1.5 to 3 | For AI that runs in Renly, the AI Use Register, the incident register and the governance dashboard supply several measures directly. The executive dashboard and review are yours.AI Use Register Enterprise; AI incident register Enterprise |
| I-106 Generate the executive dashboard from systems of recordLifts 1.5 to 4 | Renly can stream agent activity, audit and evidence events to the organisation’s monitoring and security systems, which then feed the dashboard alongside other sources.Monitoring and export; Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-103 Appoint the Chief AI Officer with written authority; I-104 Manage AI investment as a gated portfolio; I-107 Gate funding on evidence and act on it; I-108 Refresh strategy and appetite from operating evidence; I-109 Write AI accountability into executive performance agreements.
2. Governance and operating model
Renly capabilities that help: AI Use Register, Evidence Passport, Action rules and approvals, Two-person approval. Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-201 Name an accountable owner for every AI use caseLifts 2.1 to 3 | The AI Use Register names the accountable owner for each use, including uses added by hand for AI outside Renly.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-202 Establish the AI governance committee with decision rightsLifts 2.2 to 3 | The committee itself is yours. Its gate decisions can be recorded in the AI Use Register with who decided and when.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-203 Open the register and run the first discovery sweepLifts 2.3 to 3 | On Enterprise, the organisation’s agents, active automations and configured connectors in Renly are added to the AI Use Register automatically. Agents created inside a workspace, external (MCP) servers and AI in other systems are added by hand; Renly does not discover AI elsewhere.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-204 Feed the register from intake and procurement, and reconcile itLifts 2.3 to 4 | On Enterprise, most AI that runs in Renly is added to the register automatically, so the procurement feed mainly needs to cover AI outside Renly (workspace agents and external servers are added by hand).AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-206 Complete the first internal audit of AI governanceLifts 2.4 to 4 | For AI that runs in Renly, auditors can be given exported evidence bundles with a hash manifest, an organisation admin can verify the hash chain inside Renly, and gate decisions are recorded in the register.Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise; AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-208 Delegate standard decisions and route approvals through toolingLifts 2.2 to 4, 2.5 to 4 | For AI that runs in Renly, action rules, named approvers on automations and two-person approval put decision rights into the runtime.Action rules and approvals All plans; Two-person approval Agents: all plans. AI Use Register setting: Enterprise |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-205 Map the lines of assurance and put AI in the audit plan; I-207 Write decision rights, a RACI and the escalation path; I-209 Stand up the AI centre of excellence; I-210 Run annual owner attestation and close ownership gaps.
3. Risk, assurance and transparency
Renly capabilities that help: AI Use Register, Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode, Evidence Passport, AI incident register, Pause all agents (kill switch). Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-301 Adopt an impact assessment method and screen at intakeLifts 3.1 to 2 | The AI Use Register captures impact fields (people affected, potential harms, decision significance, reversibility) and tracks the impact assessment stage. The assessment itself stays with you.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-302 Complete impact assessments for high-tier and existing use casesLifts 3.1 to 3 | Assessment status and review dates for each use are tracked in the AI Use Register.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-303 Adopt the assurance lifecycle and readiness gatesLifts 3.3 to 3 | The AI Use Register implements a seven-stage lifecycle and records the decision at each of five gates with who decided and when.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-304 Enforce gates in change and deployment controlsLifts 3.3 to 4 | For agents built in Renly, a production-tier agent with active test cases cannot change until its tests pass and a different admin approves.Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode |
| I-305 Tier every use case independently against the criteriaLifts 3.2 to 3 | The register suggests a tier from its risk factors; the independent tier decision stays with you.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-306 Refresh assessments and tiers on change, and calibrate tieringLifts 3.1 to 4, 3.2 to 4 | Review intervals and next review dates per use are scheduled in the AI Use Register.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-307 Inventory decisions about people and explain them in the privacy policyLifts 3.4 to 2 | The AI Use Register lets admins mark uses where automated-decision disclosure applies, and exports a disclosure statement for them.AI Use Register Enterprise |
| I-308 Publish the transparency statement and design human review pathsLifts 3.4 to 3 | For AI that runs in Renly, the Evidence Passport records which model and tools contributed and who approved, which supports explaining a decision on review.Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise |
| I-310 Adopt the AI incident runbook and register, and rehearse itLifts 3.5 to 3 | For AI in Renly, the incident register keeps incidents and near misses linked to the evidence and raises incidents from reliability drops and reported responses, and an admin can pause all agents in one click, which stops every agent action until they are resumed.AI incident register Enterprise; Pause all agents (kill switch) All plans |
| I-311 Review near misses monthly and close corrective actionsLifts 3.5 to 4 | Incidents close with a resolution and lessons, and the register exports to CSV for the monthly review.AI incident register Enterprise |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-309 Test disclosures and track review requests.
4. Data, knowledge and semantics
Renly capabilities that help: Space, Evidence Passport, Data residency and bring-your-own model, Personal identifier masking, Third-party tool containment, Retention and legal hold, Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode. Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-403 Curate knowledge sources and agree the vocabularyLifts 4.2 to 3 | Space holds curated pages with owners, roles and version history; AI edits made on a page are proposals a person accepts, and in spaces that require approval, agent writes go to review.Space |
| I-404 Adopt a decision-record standard for in-scope usesLifts 4.4 to 3 | For AI that runs in Renly, the Evidence Passport records the model that answered, the tools that ran, who approved each write, the policy verdict and hashes of prompt and answer for every response.Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise |
| I-405 Make decision records tamper-evident and monitor completenessLifts 4.4 to 4 | Evidence records are sealed into the organisation’s own hash chain; on Enterprise, marking a use evidence-mandatory refuses its agent’s write actions while signed evidence cannot be recorded, and admins can verify the chain.Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise |
| I-406 Set and publish a sensitivity ceiling for each AI toolLifts 4.3 to 3 | Renly states where it stores data (Azure Australia East) and that model calls may be processed outside Australia by the model provider, which is the information needed to set Renly’s own ceiling.Data residency and bring-your-own model BYOLLM and BYOK: Enterprise |
| I-407 Enforce sensitivity ceilings technicallyLifts 4.3 to 4 | Within Renly, Australian identifiers are masked before tool results reach a model, agents can be limited to named connectors, and Enterprise can route model calls to the organisation’s own provider. This is not an enterprise data loss prevention system.Personal identifier masking; Third-party tool containment MCP connections: Pro Plus and Enterprise; Data residency and bring-your-own model BYOLLM and BYOK: Enterprise |
| I-408 Map AI content to retention rules and configure toolsLifts 4.5 to 3 | Renly lets admins set how long audit logs and chats are kept and export evidence bundles and chats as records.Retention and legal hold Retention and legal hold: Pro Plus and Enterprise. Chat PDF and a chat’s evidence bundle: all plans. Export for a period: Enterprise |
| I-409 Test legal holds and disposal for AI contentLifts 4.5 to 4 | A legal hold can be placed on one chat or the whole organisation in Renly; held content cannot be deleted until the hold is lifted.Retention and legal hold Retention and legal hold: Pro Plus and Enterprise. Chat PDF and a chat’s evidence bundle: all plans. Export for a period: Enterprise |
| I-410 Evaluate answers against curated sources and resolve conflictsLifts 4.2 to 4 | For agents built in Renly, test cases with an AI judge check answers for expected terms, the tools used and a rubric. Checking answers against source documents stays with you.Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-401 Baseline data quality for priority AI data domains; I-402 Monitor data quality for production AI.
5. Platform, architecture and security
Renly capabilities that help: Data residency and bring-your-own model, Monitoring and export, Pause all agents (kill switch), Rollback, Third-party tool containment, Governed Runtime policy checks. Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-501 Approve an AI reference architecture on an assessed platformLifts 5.1 to 3 | Renly is a service that runs on the platform side of this picture, not the organisation’s landing zone; its hosting and residency are documented for the residency register.Data residency and bring-your-own model BYOLLM and BYOK: Enterprise |
| I-505 Centralise logging and monitor AI behaviourLifts 5.5 to 3 | Renly streams agent activity as OpenTelemetry traces and audit events to a security monitoring system, flags failure bursts with a reliability score, and lets an admin pause all agents in one click.Monitoring and export; Pause all agents (kill switch) All plans |
| I-506 Rehearse halt and rollback, and give agents their own identitiesLifts 5.5 to 4 | Renly’s kill switch, run cancellation, checkpoints and agent version restore can be included in the rehearsal for AI that runs in Renly. Agent identities in the organisation’s own identity platform are not a Renly capability.Pause all agents (kill switch) All plans; Rollback |
| I-508 Monitor vendor AI and act on change noticesLifts 5.4 to 4 | Within Renly, external tool servers ask for approval by default and each agent can be limited to named connectors.Third-party tool containment MCP connections: Pro Plus and Enterprise |
| I-509 Map AI threats to controls and test before releaseLifts 5.2 to 3 | For AI that runs in Renly, Governed Runtime policy checks (Enterprise, once switched on) run before requests reach a model, and external tools need approval by default; the threat model and tests remain yours.Governed Runtime policy checks Enterprise; Third-party tool containment MCP connections: Pro Plus and Enterprise |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-502 Enforce platform guardrails as code; I-503 Publish the approved AI tool and model list; I-504 Detect and follow up unapproved AI use; I-507 Adopt an AI procurement checklist and contract clauses; I-510 Red-team high-tier systems and monitor AI attacks.

| I-603 Build evaluation suites with agreed pass criteriaLifts 6.3 to 3 | Agents built in Renly can carry test cases judged in a read-only sandbox, and pending changes can run in shadow mode against real requests.Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode |
| I-604 Run evaluations on every change and review them independentlyLifts 6.3 to 4 | In Renly, a production-tier agent with active test cases cannot change until its tests pass and a different admin approves; shadow agreement is shown in the register.Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode |
| I-605 Set autonomy and approval rules for each systemLifts 6.2 to 3 | For agents in Renly, each action is set to Allowed, Ask first or Never, and sending, posting and publishing always need a person.Action rules and approvals All plans |
| I-606 Enforce autonomy in the platform and watch approval ratesLifts 6.2 to 4 | Renly enforces action rules where tools run and binds each approval by fingerprint to the recipients, amounts, records or command reviewed. Approval records are kept; trend reporting on approval rates is the organisation’s.Action rules and approvals All plans; Two-person approval Agents: all plans. AI Use Register setting: Enterprise |
| I-607 Put review and scanning gates on AI-generated code and contentLifts 6.4 to 3 | Renly code sessions present changes for approval in the default ask mode and keep checkpoints that can be reverted. Merge gates in the organisation’s repositories remain the organisation’s.Rollback |
Yours, not Renly’s: I-601 Adopt an AI specification template and design gate; I-608 Record provenance of AI-assisted work and measure its quality; I-609 Adopt a secure-and-safe design review for AI; I-610 Feed incidents and threat models into design reviews.
7. Use-case delivery and value

8. People, capability and culture
Renly capabilities that help: Renly Academy, Action rules and approvals, Governed Runtime policy checks, Renly agents in Microsoft Teams and Copilot, AI incident register. Read the domain.
| Initiative | Where Renly helps |
|---|---|
| I-801 Make foundational AI training mandatory and track completionLifts 8.1 to 3 | The free Renly Academy course teaches responsible use of AI and agents, issues a verifiable certificate and gives managers a team completion register. The capabilities
Each capability, its status and plan, what it does, and where it stops.
AI Use Register Enterprise
Adds the organisation’s agents, active automations and configured connectors in Renly automatically (refreshed nightly and when an admin opens the register), and lets you add AI used outside Renly by hand. Scores inherent and residual risk across eight factors to a tier, names the accountable owner, tracks each use through a seven-stage lifecycle (intake, impact assessment, design, simulation, shadow, operating, retired), records the go or no-go decision at five gates with the date and the admin who recorded it, schedules reviews, and exports a disclosure statement for uses that need one.
Where it stops: Agents created inside a workspace and external (MCP) servers are added by hand, as is AI in other systems: Renly does not discover AI outside Renly. Sharing the register with a regulator or the DTA stays with you.
Evidence Passport All plans; mandatory evidence and organisation-wide export on Enterprise
Every response carries an evidence record: which model answered, which tools ran and who approved each write, the policy verdict, and hashes of the prompt and answer, sealed into the organisation’s own hash chain so tampering is detectable. The owner of a chat can export its evidence bundle on every plan. On Enterprise, marking a use ‘evidence mandatory’ refuses its agent’s write actions while signed evidence cannot be recorded, and admins can verify the chain and export recent evidence records.
Where it stops: Covers AI that runs in Renly. Capture is best effort unless evidence is marked mandatory, and the mandatory setting guards write actions, not reads. Export for a chosen period is available through the API.
Action rules and approvals All plans
Each of an agent’s actions has a rule, set per person: actions that send or change things are set to Ask first or Never, and other actions to Allowed or Never. Actions set to Never are hidden and refused. Sending, posting and publishing through Renly’s built-in tools always need a person. Approvals arrive as cards in chat, in an Approvals inbox or as signed email links; each is single-use, expires, is bound by a fingerprint to the consequential details the person reviewed (such as recipients, amounts, records or a command), and records who approved it. Automations can route approvals to a named approver.
Where it stops: Approval and override rates are recorded but not yet reported as a trend view. An admin can let an individual external (MCP) tool run without approval. Where a built-in action has no consequential detail to bind, the binding is logged rather than enforced.
Two-person approval Agents: all plans. AI Use Register setting: Enterprise
Mark an agent, or a use in the AI Use Register, as two-person: its approval-gated actions then need two different people, and both are recorded in the Evidence Passport.
Where it stops: Needs an organisation owner or admin other than the person who asked and the first approver.
Pause all agents (kill switch) All plans
An organisation admin can pause all agents in one click. While paused, automations, Tasks, triggers, hand-offs and sub-agents stop, and agents in chat, Microsoft Teams, Copilot Studio and connected clients can only reply: every tool call is refused, the pause is checked afresh before each action, and held approvals cannot run until agents are resumed. On Renly Desktop, a keyboard shortcut pauses computer control, and any paired device can be revoked remotely.
Where it stops: Halts AI running in Renly, not other systems. A command already sent to a desktop device finishes; the next one is refused. People acting for themselves, such as committing their own code, are not paused.
Rollback
Code sessions keep checkpoints of files an agent edits so they can be reverted; a chat can be rewound to an earlier message; agents keep versions that can be restored.
Where it stops: Changes an aborted run already made in other systems are listed for clean-up, not undone automatically.
Governed Runtime policy checks Enterprise
When switched on, an independent policy service checks each chat request before it reaches a model, and each automation step and agent hand-off before it runs. If the policy service cannot be reached, requests are blocked by default; admins can choose to warn or allow instead.
Where it stops: Off until an admin switches it on. Policies are written by the organisation.
Agent tests, promotion gate and shadow mode
Write test cases for an agent (expected terms, expected tools and a rubric) and run them against real data in a read-only sandbox with an AI judge. Mark an agent as production tier and, once it has active test cases, every change waits for a different admin’s approval after its tests pass; an override needs a written, audited reason. An admin can run a pending change in shadow mode: Renly replays a sample of real requests against it in the sandbox (up to 50 a day by default), compares its answers with the live ones and shows the agreement rate in the register.
Where it stops: Evaluates agents built in Renly. An admin can remove the production-tier mark and then edit directly.
Monitoring and export
Streams governed agent actions to an OpenTelemetry endpoint as GenAI traces carrying hashes rather than content, and audit and evidence events to a security information and event management system as signed webhooks. Owners are told when a run fails or an approval expires, and each agent carries a reliability score that flags bursts of failures.
Where it stops: Monitors AI running in Renly.
AI incident register Enterprise
Keeps each AI incident and near miss with severity, owner and timeline, linked to the agent, chat, automation run and evidence involved. Renly raises an incident itself when an agent’s reliability drops or someone reports a response; severity 1 and 2 incidents notify owners and admins. Records whether the privacy regulator or the DTA must be told, closes incidents with resolution and lessons, and exports to CSV.
Where it stops: Deciding whether to notify, and notifying, stays with the organisation.
Personal identifier masking
Before a tool result reaches the model, Renly masks tax file numbers, Medicare numbers and individual healthcare identifiers (checked against their check digits), passport, driver licence and Centrelink numbers when labelled, card numbers, credentials and some United States formats.
Where it stops: Applies to content passing through Renly; it is not an enterprise data loss prevention system.
Retention and legal hold Retention and legal hold: Pro Plus and Enterprise. Chat PDF and a chat’s evidence bundle: all plans. Export for a period: Enterprise
Set how long audit logs and chat transcripts are kept, export evidence bundles (records, a hash manifest and an attestation) for a chat or a period, export chats to PDF, and place a legal hold on one chat or the whole organisation so held content cannot be deleted until an admin lifts the hold.
Where it stops: Mapping AI content to your records authorities or retention classes stays with you.
Third-party tool containment MCP connections: Pro Plus and Enterprise
Tools on external MCP servers ask for approval by default, read-only hints count only from servers an admin marks as trusted, and each agent can be limited to named connectors, read only or read and write.
Where it stops: Applies to tools reached through Renly.
Single sign-on and provisioning SAML: Enterprise
Sign-in with Microsoft, Google or the organisation’s own identity provider over SAML 2.0 for verified domains, with single sign-on able to be required, and SCIM 2.0 provisioning and deprovisioning.
Where it stops: Sign-in inside the Teams tab and the Azure DevOps extension does not yet apply a required sign-in provider.
Data residency and bring-your-own model BYOLLM and BYOK: Enterprise
Renly’s databases and file storage run on Microsoft Azure in Australia East. Model calls go to the provider of the model in use, which may process them outside Australia. On Enterprise, model calls can be routed to the organisation’s own provider and stored credentials wrapped with the organisation’s own Azure Key Vault key.
Where it stops: Set each tool’s sensitivity ceiling with this processing location in mind.
Renly Academy Free
A free course on using AI and agents responsibly at work, with a short assessment, a certificate anyone can verify online, and a team completion register that a manager can export.
Where it stops: A completion record, not an accredited qualification; use alongside training the organisation mandates.
Objectives and metrics Beta
Objectives in Automations carry metrics with a baseline, a target and a target date. Each measurement records whether an agent, a person or the system recorded it and from which run, and progress is shown against target.
Where it stops: Measures what is recorded against the objective; finance attribution stays with you.
Automations
Tasks, workflows and objectives run on one engine with per-step approvals, named approvers, pre-flight checks before launch, run history and retry from a failed step.
Space
Shared pages and spaces with roles and version history. An AI edit made on a page is a proposal that a person accepts, saved as an attributed version; in spaces that require approval, agent writes go to review.
Where it stops: Outside approval spaces, an agent with edit rights saves a new version directly. Curating which sources AI may use stays with content owners.
Renly agents in Microsoft Teams and Copilot Teams and Copilot Chat: Pro Plus and Enterprise New
Renly agents answer in Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat with approval cards, and Microsoft Copilot Studio agents can hand work to Renly agents through MCP and A2A under the same approvals, autonomy settings and evidence.
Where it stops: Built in October 2026 and being rolled out; ask Renly to confirm it is enabled for your tenant before relying on it.
Records Pro Plus and Enterprise Early access
Structured business data such as customers and cases that agents read and update under the same approvals and evidence as other actions.
Where it stops: Beta, enabled per organisation on request.
AI governance assessment Free
A free assessment on renly.ai against the Governing Intelligence framework that produces a draft AI governance strategy and roadmap in Word, kept in the browser.
Where it stops: A starting draft; the strategy is a leadership decision.
