renlyAI vs Midjourney vs ChatGPT: AI Image Generation Compared

renlyAI team · 13 April 2026 · 6 min read

Three of the most popular ways to generate images with AI. Three very different approaches. If you are trying to decide which one to use, here is an honest comparison based on features, not marketing.

We make renlyAI, so we are obviously biased. To balance that, we will be upfront about where the other tools are better. Every claim below is based on publicly available pricing and feature pages as of April 2026.

Where each tool shines

ChatGPT: best for volume and versatility

If you need to generate a lot of images and do not care about 4K resolution, ChatGPT is hard to beat. Unlimited image generation at $20/month means you can iterate endlessly without watching a credit counter. Plus, you get the full ChatGPT assistant alongside it, so you can go from writing copy to generating matching visuals in the same conversation.

For brainstorming, social media content, and rapid prototyping, the unlimited volume is a real advantage.

Midjourney: best for artistic style and community

Midjourney has spent years building a distinctive aesthetic. If you want images with a specific artistic look, especially stylized illustrations, concept art, or cinematic compositions, Midjourney's models are tuned for that. They also have a large, active community that shares prompts and techniques, which helps you get better results faster.

At $10/month for roughly 200 images, the value is solid for creative professionals who care more about style than resolution.

renlyAI: best for resolution and all-in-one workflow

renlyAI is the only one of the three that offers native 4K image generation. If you need images for print, large displays, client deliverables, or any use case where resolution matters, this is the key differentiator. A single 4K image from renlyAI has 16 times more pixels than a standard ChatGPT output.

renlyAI also combines image generation with chat, notes, a wiki, and connected tools in one place. If you want a single platform that handles images alongside your other work, that integration matters.

Where each tool falls short

Being honest means admitting weaknesses. Here is where each tool has gaps:

  • ChatGPT maxes out at about 1.8K resolution. If you need anything larger than a social media image, you will need to upscale externally. No native 4K option.
  • Midjourney requires a separate app or Discord. There is no built-in AI assistant, no editing suite, and no video generation. It does one thing well but only that one thing.
  • renlyAI gives you fewer images per month than either competitor at the entry price. 10 credits at $9.99 means you need to be intentional about what you generate, or buy additional credit packs. The platform is also newer, with a smaller community and less name recognition.

No single tool is the best at everything. The right choice depends on whether you value volume, artistic style, or resolution and workflow integration.

Which one should you choose?

Here is a simple decision framework:

  • Your marketing team needs lots of images fast and resolution is not critical: ChatGPT. Unlimited generations at $20 is unbeatable for volume.
  • Your creative team cares about artistic style and wants a large prompt community: Midjourney. The aesthetic quality and community knowledge base are genuine strengths.
  • Your team needs high resolution (2K or 4K) for print, client deliverables, or large screen presentations: renlyAI. Native 4K generation is not something the other tools offer.
  • You want one governed platform for image generation and every other AI workflow (chat, agents, reports, wiki, connected tools across finance, sales, ops, and more): renlyAI. This is the biggest reason business teams choose renlyAI over point tools.

These tools are not mutually exclusive. Many teams use ChatGPT for quick iterations, Midjourney for stylised art, and renlyAI when they need high-resolution output on a platform that also governs their other AI work. Pick the tool that fits the job.
